Welcome to the 2020 - 2021 school year - Distance Learning Style

coming soon

Hello Van Wig Families,

This is an unprecedented time not only in education, but in history.  We have closed our school doors in order to Shelter in Place and “flatten the curve” of this terrible illness. This puts us in a unique position in how we educate your children, how services are provided, and how we support you through this process.  We are doing our best to answer the call of this essential service.

I want to ask for your flexibility and patience as we navigate these uncharted waters.  It is important to understand that our state acted quickly which gave little notice of statewide school closures.  To ask

districts to revolutionize the way they educate students in is a tall order and requires many considerations.  Please know that educators are working diligently to support your children and you throughout this process.  Teachers are constantly exploring new ways, above what they are already employing, to provide instructional support and to communicate with you effectively.

The work that is asked of your children is not optional.  The Hold Harmless policy has expired and your children will receive grades for the work assigned. It is the task of our teachers to provide instruction on of the Essential Standards to your children through the school closure.  They will continue to monitor student academic progress.  It is the task of your children to work both on and off line throughout the school day and we need your support to ensure your children are present every day.  Please reach out to your child’s teacher via email or Class Dojo for any questions or concerns you may have.  Daily Class Schedules, office hours, and contact information is available under the academics tab of this website.

One last note, this may be a stressful time for you and your families.  It is important that we maintain calm and do not project our stress onto the children, which may be very difficult.  As a mother myself, I see the fear and anxiety this pandemic has placed on my daughters.  This is new and stressful for them too.  It is a great opportunity to talk and work through those feelings with your children.  I will be posting resources to help you navigate this.  You might encourage your children to take pictures, draw, or write about their feelings as well. Put these pictures, drawings, and/or writings away after this is all over and your children will have a record of how they lived through the COVID 19 pandemic.

Please be well and safe throughout this time. Stay at home as much as possible and be part of the solution. Should you need anything immediate, please call the school and leave a message at 626-931-8000 or email me at gmorlaes@bassettusd.org.

We appreciate your support and teamwork during Distance Learning.  Your efforts do not go unnoticed.

Be well and stay safe!
